Humidity
Humidity, Health, and WellbeingExperts recommend that your relative humidity should be maintained at between 30% and 55%. Lower levels (Dry air) will often aggravate skin allergies and respiratory problems. Levels above 55% will increase the growth of bacteria, mold, and many viruses. Dust mites will breed more actively when the humidity in your home reaches a level above 50%. Maintaining the recommended level of humidity in your home will most likely reduce dry skin problems you may be having. Severe cracking of the skin on your face and hands may indicate a considerable lack of humidity in your environment and needs to be addressed. Children who experience spontaneous nosebleeds, are typical found to live in a house that has a low relative humidity. The dry air draws the moisture out of the cells in the nose and nasal cavity, causing small blood vessels to harden and crack, causing the nose bleed. Humidity & ComfortFew people realize that drier air feels cooler, and even fewer understand why this occurs. Air acts like a sponge. If it is lacking moisture it will pull it from wherever it can. Dry air soaks it up very well. When it pulls that moisture from your skin, the evaporation cools the skin, and you feel cold. This causes you to turn up your thermostat and increase your gas or electric bill. Increasing the moisture level of the air lowers the rate of evaporation, and you feel warm at a lower temperature setting. Protecting Your Hard-Earned AssetsKeeping the recommended relative humidity in your house can help protect your property. Dry air can cause splitting and warping in hardwood floors, wooden furniture etc. Wood changes size and shape quite dramatically when subjected to a low humidity environment. A properly humidified environment can help diminish the chance of permanently damaging your precious woodwork and instruments over the long term.
