How an infrared sauna works

Unlike traditional sauna's which heat the air using some type of heat source, infrared sauna's use infrared (a type of light) to heat not the air but objects in the sauna. Thus they can warm you and cause you to sweat (the main benefits of saunas are found in them allowing your pores to open and sweating out impurities) without also subjecting your lungs and respiratory system to the intense heat found in traditional saunas. The companies that sell this type of sauna seem to believe that an infrared sauna is by far a better option than a traditional sauna.

Infrared Sauna Company Claims:

There are a great many claims coming from infrared sauna manufacturers. Some of these may be true, some may be based on insuffient or incorrect evidence, but this list covers a few of the most popular claims.

Superior Detoxification: Infrared Sauna's will remove heavy metals & fat-stored toxins from your body
An infrared sauna will increase cardiovascual conditioning (some companies go as far as comparing sitting in the sauna to the conditioning attained by marathon runners)
An infrared sauna will stimilate your immune system and improve your circulation.
An infrared sauna will cause you to sweat considerably more than a traditional sauna will.
They are cheaper to purchase, as well as cheaper to operate when compared to a traditional electric sauna.
Unlike a traditional sauna they do not take time to heat up, so there is not waiting time when you want to enjoy your sauna.

After a rather comprehensive search of the internet I have not managed to find any negative press about infrared saunas. All I have managed to find are sites either selling saunas or touting the benefits of their use. This may be because sauna manufacturers and other pro infrared sauna sites are much better at search engine optimization, or it could be that there actually very few complaints that could be made about this type of product.
