Cation Softening Resins

Cation resins are most commonly used to soften water by removing calcium and magnesium. While the majority of cation resins can also be used to remove low levels of iron and manganese concurrent with the softening objective, some are specifically engineered to have greater iron capacity, including Purolite SSTC6000E (SSTC-60), Ecomix, and fine mesh resins. The most common cation resins on the market have 8% crosslinking. These are suitable for most well water applications and city water treatment where the level of chlorine is low to moderate. For city water with high levels of chlorine or chloramine, 10% crosslinked resins are often selected due to their superior chemical resistance.
